The works of Melmont
The
late twentieth century was stumbling along, weeping as
usual, with widows and orphans in its arms, when it was
abruptly swallowed; not by some sinister ancient Eater of Worlds,
either, but devoured by a twentieth century human, billionaire
publisher Earnest Melmont MC, along with the rest of what used to
be ‘our’ universe. With massive cheek, Melmont has scoffed the lot.
Physics today has a new equation, where e is Everything and M is Melmont;
e<M
The last century is sometimes said to start with Einstein's famous
equation on relativity. It certainly closes with e<M. It would be
tragic, but tragedy alas, does not play in the nano-ruins of
Time and Space we now inhabit. Pleasures of reading,
drinking, or making love, have all become ‘virtual’.
Anyone can build Rome in a morning, before
their coffee-break. Post e<M Space and
Time are both notional, to fit into the
limited space available in Melmont's gut.
Come with me, stranger, friend, and I will show you
the rise of Corporal Melmont from the ruins of Berlin, to
nuclear weapons trader, leading to to his Transfiguration.
You and I may have been a side order when history stopped, but
thanks to the enduring furtive magic of carbon and paper, key
moments leading up to ‘e’ hour are still recoverable,
from the Void.
